“소스스파게티” Korean Tongue Twister
목동 로얄 뉴로얄 레스토랑 뉴메뉴 미트소시지소스스파게티 크림소시지소스스테이크.
Translation: Mokdong Royal New Royal Restaurant’s new menu: meat sausage sauce spaghetti, cream sausage sauce steak.
Why Is It Hard?
This is one of the longest Korean tongue twisters and is composed almost entirely of English loanwords adapted into Korean phonetics. The key challenge is 미트소시지소스스파게티 — a 10-syllable compound of meat-sausage-sauce-spaghetti — where the repeated S sound (소, 소스, 스파) creates an S-chain of six consecutive S-containing syllables. 크림소시지소스스테이크 adds another five S-syllables. The tongue cannot maintain the ㅅ/ㅆ distinction throughout and typically flattens to one sound.
History
소스스파게티 is a distinctly modern Korean tongue twister born from the explosion of Western restaurant culture in South Korea in the 1990s and 2000s. The Mokdong district of Seoul was known for trendy restaurant strips, and the exaggerated menu title satirises the era’s enthusiasm for English-sounding restaurant names and elaborate menu descriptions. It circulated widely on the internet in the 2000s and became one of the most shared Korean tongue twisters of the social media age.
Tips for Saying It
- Break it into three chunks: restaurant name / spaghetti dish / steak dish — master each separately.
- 미트소시지소스스파게티: count the S sounds — meat(1)-sou(2)-sage(3)-sauce(4)-spa(5)-ghetti — keeping track prevents the chain from collapsing.
- This one is more about memory than pure phonetics — once you can recall it, speed follows naturally.
