“초코친” Korean Tongue Twister
안 촉촉한 초코친 나라에 살던 안 촉촉한 초코친이 촉촉한 초코친 나라의 촉촉한 초코친을 보고 촉촉한 초코친이 되고 싶어서 촉촉한 초코친 나라에 갔는데 촉촉한 초코친 나라의 문지기가 “너은 촉촉한 초코친이 아니고 안 촉촉한 초코친이니까 안 촉촉한 초코친 나라에서 살아”라고 해서 안 촉촉한 초코친은 촉촉한 초코친이 되는 것을 포기하고 안 촉촉한 초코친 나라로 돌아갔다.
Translation: A dry chocolate chip living in the land of dry chocolate chips saw a moist chocolate chip from the land of moist chocolate chips and wanted to become a moist chocolate chip, so it went to the land of moist chocolate chips, but the gatekeeper of the land of moist chocolate chips said: ‘You are not a moist chocolate chip but a dry chocolate chip, so live in the land of dry chocolate chips.’ So the dry chocolate chip gave up on becoming a moist chocolate chip and returned to the land of dry chocolate chips.
Why Is It Hard?
This is one of the longest Korean tongue twisters and one of the most viral online. 촉촉한 (moist/damp) and 안 촉촉한 (not moist/dry) alternate throughout, with 초코친 (chocolate chip) appearing over a dozen times. 촉촉한 is itself a challenging word — a doubled aspirated consonant 촉 (ch) followed by 한 — and producing it reliably at speed while tracking whether the current chip is moist or dry creates a combined phonetic and semantic overload that even fluent Korean speakers struggle with.
History
초코친 became a phenomenon in the 2000s Korean internet era, spreading through online communities as a challenge to read aloud without mistakes. Its narrative structure — a full story arc with a protagonist, a journey, and a resolution — is unique among tongue twisters worldwide, most of which are just phrases or sentences. Korean netizens embraced it as the ultimate test of diction, and videos of people attempting and failing it accumulated millions of views. It is now considered a cultural landmark of Korean internet humour and language play.
Tips for Saying It
- 촉촉한 vs 안 촉촉한: the 안 prefix is your only signal of which chip type you are describing — never drop it.
- Break it into the story beats: chip sees moist chip / wants to become one / goes to the land / gets rejected / returns home. Use the narrative to pace yourself.
- This is more of a memory and stamina challenge than a pure phonetics one — memorise the story first, then work on speed.
