Translation: We slaughtered our cow and they slaughtered a cow in Baraqba; our broth turned out better than the broth from Baraqba.
Why Is It Hard?
The place name بارقبة (Baraqba — a town near Damascus) recurs three times and contains the difficult sequence B-R-Q-B — four consonants requiring rapid back-and-forth tongue movement. It is paired with بقرتنا (our cow) and بقرة (a cow), which share the same B-Q-R root, creating a thicket of B and Q sounds. The Arabic ق (qaf) is produced deep in the throat — distinctly different from English K — and sustaining it through the repeated sequences is exhausting.
History
This tongue twister comes from the Levantine Arabic tradition and specifically references Baraqba, a real town in the Damascus countryside of Syria. The scenario — comparing the quality of two batches of broth from cattle slaughtered in different villages — reflects the rural food culture of the Levant, where beef broth quality was genuinely a matter of local pride. Tips for Saying It
- بارقبة is your toughest word — practise it alone: Ba-RAQ-ba, with a clear deep-throat Q in the middle.
- The ق (qaf) must stay distinct from ك (kaf) — qaf is produced further back; if you feel it in the middle of your mouth, you have drifted to kaf.
- The phrase has a satisfying narrative arc — set-up (we slaughtered) and payoff (our broth is better). Use that structure to pace yourself.
