“شمس مشمسه” Arabic Tongue Twister

شمس تمشي و شمس مشمسه

Translation: A sun walks and a sunny sun (a sun that is all sunshine).

Why Is It Hard?

The word شمس (shams — sun) is repeated twice, but the second appearance is inside the compound مشمسه (mushammsah — full of sunshine, sunny). The SH sound that opens شمس reappears buried inside مشمسه, and the M that follows SH in شمس is also repeated throughout. At speed, the sentence becomes a wall of interleaved SH and M sounds where the boundaries between words blur completely — the ear hears one continuous shimmer rather than distinct words.

History

شمس مشمسه is a popular Arabic tongue twister across North Africa and the Levant, reflecting the central role of the sun in Arabic culture and poetry. The word شمس (sun) has deep resonance in Arabic literature — it appears in countless poems, names, and proverbs. The formation of مشمسه from the root of شمس is a perfect example of Arabic’s root-and-pattern morphology, where the same three-letter root (ش-م-س) generates a family of related words. This phonetic richness makes it ideal for a tongue twister.

Tips for Saying It

  • شمس contains SH then M — مشمسه contains M then SH then M again; knowing the internal structure helps you navigate it.
  • Say شمس three times cleanly before adding تمشي (walks) and مشمسه.
  • The phrase has a natural rhythm: SHAMS-ta-MSHi-wa-SHAMS-mush-AM-mah — tap it out before speaking.
