Sopra la panca la capra campa, sotto la panca la capra crepa

Sopra la panca la capra campa, sotto la panca la capra crepa

Above the bench the goat lives, below the bench the goat dies

Why Is It Hard?

The c sound dominates: panca, capra, campa, crepa. But the key challenge is the vowel switch from campa (lives) to crepa (dies). Speakers must also navigate the p and r cluster in crepa without slurring. The parallel structure of the two halves tricks the brain into repeating the same sounds in a slightly different order.

History

Sopra la panca is one of the oldest Italian tongue twisters in recorded collections. The bench and goat imagery comes from rural Italian life. It has been used as a diction exercise in Commedia dell Arte traditions and continues to appear in modern Italian primary school curricula.

Tips for Saying It

  • Pause at the comma: sopra la panca / sotto la panca.
  • Exaggerate the difference between campa and crepa in slow practice.
  • Practise the crepa syllable alone — cr is a sharp, crisp cluster.
