Lal Dal Kali Dal is a short but punchy Urdu tongue twister that alternates between two nearly identical two-word phrases. “Lal dal” means red lentil and “kali dal” means black lentil – both common foods in South Asian cooking. The twister works by exploiting the similarity between “lal” and “kali” when said at speed, causing speakers to consistently swap one for the other.
The Tongue Twister – Full Text
Lal dal, kali dal,
Lal dal kali, kali dal lal,
Lal kali dal, kali lal dal.
In Urdu Script
لال دال، کالی دال،
لال دال کالی، کالی دال لال،
لال کالی دال، کالی لال دال۔
English Translation
“Red lentil, black lentil – red lentil black, black lentil red – red black lentil, black red lentil.”
Why It’s Hard
This twister uses only three words – lal (red), kali (black), and dal (lentil) – but it rearranges them in six different orders across three lines. Your brain learns the first arrangement, then the second line shifts the order, and the third line shifts it again. The word “dal” anchors each phrase but the adjectives keep swapping. By the end of the third line, most speakers have completely lost track of whether they are saying “lal” or “kali” before “dal.”
The additional challenge is that “lal” and “kali” are two syllables vs one syllable. The rhythm changes every time the words switch positions, disrupting the pattern your mouth was settling into.
How to Practice
- Say “lal, kali, lal, kali” 10 times to build a clear distinction.
- Then try “lal dal, kali dal” 5 times.
- Add line 2: “lal dal kali, kali dal lal” – this is the hardest transition.
- Line 3 adds the reversed order: complete it once line 2 is stable.
Difficulty Rating
Medium. Only three words, but the six-arrangement structure makes it surprisingly disorienting. A good starter Urdu tongue twister for children aged 7 and above.
