Llond llaw o liwiau llonydd
Llond llaw o liwiau llonydd
A handful of still colours
Why Is It Hard?
Welsh Ll is a voiceless lateral fricative – a sound that does not exist in English, Spanish, French, German, or most European languages. To make it, you place your tongue as if to say L and then blow air out through both sides of your mouth simultaneously. This twister forces you to produce this sound four times in quick succession: Llond, llaw, liwiau, llonydd. Each time the Ll appears in a different vowel context.
History
Llond llaw o liwiau llonydd is a modern Welsh tongue twister designed specifically to practice the Ll sound. It is used in Welsh language schools (Ysgol Gymraeg) as a first exercise for learners of Welsh as a second language. The image of a handful of quiet colours is poetic and typically Welsh – Welsh literature has a long tradition of associating colours with calm landscapes.
Tips for Saying It
- The Welsh Ll: put your tongue for L then breathe hard through both sides – like a cat hissing sideways.
- Do not confuse Ll with the English L – they are completely different sounds.
- Practise Ll alone for 30 seconds before attempting the full phrase.
- Llond (a fill of), llaw (hand), liwiau (colours), llonydd (still/quiet) – learn each word’s meaning to anchor pronunciation.
