The Tongue Twister

Tommy Tucker tried to tie twelve twigs tightly. Tommy Tucker tried to tie twelve twigs tightly.

Why Is It Hard?

Seven of the eight words start with T or TW. The TW blend in twelve, twigs, and tightly requires your tongue to tap for T and then immediately form a W with your lips without pausing. Tucker and tightly both have double letters that can cause your mouth to stutter if you are not careful.

History and Origin

Tommy Tucker is a character from English nursery rhyme tradition, which makes this tongue twister feel connected to a much older oral tradition. T-focused twisters have been part of English speech games since at least the 18th century. This version is commonly used in primary school settings because Tommy Tucker is a familiar name and twelve twigs is a concrete image children can picture.

Tips for Saying It

TW blend: say T then immediately round your lips for W, they should be almost simultaneous. Tucker: TUCK-er, hit the K hard. Tightly: TIE-tlee, two syllables. Say Tommy Tucker alone five times to warm up. Then add tried to tie before the harder words at the end.
